Mac Keyboard Test
To test a Mac keyboard, press every key and check that it lights up on the Apple-style keyboard below. Command, Option and Control are shown separately for left and right. The fn key is usually invisible to browsers, and the top row may send brightness and volume instead of F1 to F12 unless you hold fn.
Keyboard test
You need a physical keyboard for this test. On a phone or tablet, connect a keyboard by Bluetooth or USB first. The on-screen keyboard of a phone does not report which physical key you pressed.
Click here first, so the page receives your key presses.
The page lost focus, perhaps because of Alt+Tab, the Windows key or a shortcut. Click anywhere on the page and continue.

How it works
Press keys on your keyboard. Each key lights up on the picture while you hold it and stays teal once it has worked. The page reads the key events your browser already gives every web page and never sends them anywhere.
This test needs JavaScript. The explanations below work without it.
How to do it
- Click once on the page.
- Press each key on the Mac keyboard, including left and right Command, Option and Control.
- Hold fn and press the top row to test F1 to F12.
- Tick Mark keys not pressed yet to see what is left.
Mac keys that behave differently
- fn (globe) key: handled by the keyboard and macOS, so browsers normally do not see it. It is drawn dashed and is not counted.
- Top row: on most Mac keyboards the top row controls brightness, volume and media by default. Hold fn to send F1 to F12, or turn on Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys in System Settings, Keyboard.
- Command: while Command is held, many Mac browsers do not report when other keys are released. The test releases them when you let go of Command, so press letter keys on their own to test them.
- Caps Lock: Chrome and Safari on a Mac report Caps Lock once when it turns on and once when it turns off, so the key stays lit while Caps Lock is on.
- Touch ID and the eject key: not reported to web pages.
If a key does not work on a Mac
Check System Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard for Slow Keys (keys must be held before they count) and Sticky Keys. Check that the right input source is selected under System Settings, Keyboard, Text Input. Then follow the keyboard not working guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Mac top row change brightness instead of F1?
Mac keyboards send the special functions by default. Hold fn while pressing the key to send F1 to F12, or turn on Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys in System Settings, Keyboard.
Can I test the fn key on a Mac?
Usually not in a browser. The fn or globe key is handled by the keyboard and macOS and is not reported to web pages. You can check it indirectly: hold fn and press F1, and the test should show F1.
Why do keys stay lit when I hold Command?
Many Mac browsers do not send the release event for other keys while Command is down. The test clears them when you let go of Command. Test letter keys without Command for a clean result.
Does this work with a MacBook keyboard?
Yes. The built-in keyboard of a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro uses the same key positions as the picture, with the arrow keys in an inverted T at the bottom right. External Magic Keyboards work the same way.
